Another NHL issue

So… I read another NHL article today from the viewpoint of a player.. also regarding the issue of respect. Ryan Kesler formerly of the Vancouver Canucks and is now an Anaheim Duck.. was with the Ducks the other night when they took on Vancouver for the first time since Kesler left the Canucks. According to the article the Canucks showed a video as a tribute to the amount of time and effort Kesler had put in for them over the 10 years he was there… after that is when the fans turned to boo’s instead of cheers.

I can understand being disappointed that your player leaves and goes to another team but is it really necessary to boo them? They are just trying to make choices that aren’t easy most of the time. Yes, playing pro hockey as a career may seem easy to you but you so easily forget the stuff they have to put up with just like any other job. Road trips, injuries, being away from their families for extended periods of time and dealing with fans that dislike them. Sure, they get used to it and it is their job to ignore fans but there is this little thing called Respect and even though he left your team he is still a great player and deserves to have respect.

I hate to be biased here but the Minnesota Wild don’t really boo players unless some league wide issue such as what happened to Todd Bertuzzi… he deserved to be booed after what he did. To many people it seemed like Derek Boogaard got booed when he played.. but he didn’t.. his nickname was “Boogey” so naturally you hear “Boooo”. Marian Gaborik left the Wild after 8 or more years of being there and when he came back he didn’t get booed he got cheered… I’m not saying Minnesota has better fans but in terms of respect most of the time Minnesota knows how to do it. Other than their game against the Pens when people threw things.. that was classless and usually not a thing that happens in Minnesota.

I know being a pro hockey player for a career is a dream to most people but you have to remember they have feelings too. Yes they get used to most things but they are still people and deserve respect. If someone puts in a number of years for your team are you just going to turn your back on them because they got switched to a new team? I will admit I have been guilty but I try never to boo them because they still deserve respect. Can you play pro hockey? How would you feel if someone booed you at your job? Yeah, you would notice… wouldn’t you? Think about that the next time you want to boo a player.. they hear you even if they don’t want to..

This brings me to another article I just read. I reported on this issue the other day as well. It involves the Toronto Maple Leafs once again… they beat Tampa Bay and after the game they decided not to salute their fans at the end of the game. I WONDER WHY PEOPLE??? Could it be the fact the night before when the Leafs lost fans THREW THEIR JERSEYS ON THE ICE IN DISRESPECT! The players say they just wanted to try something different and not offend anyone but I frankly don’t blame them. Sure the players have to earn fans respect but it goes the other way too… I’m sorry but if I were on that team and I had that happen to me you’re damn right I wouldn’t be saluting you.. you don’t deserve it. You throw jerseys on the ice because your team is in a slump but then you expect a salute after they win… funny maybe act like you respect the team win or lose and they’ll do the same for you… it goes both ways.

I realize the Maple Leafs have had their share of struggles but a true fan doesn’t desert their team no matter how bad they are.. and when they succeed they make it that much bigger of a deal.. they wouldn’t be throwing jerseys on the ice after a loss…

Think about that one.. how would you feel as a player? Yeah… that’s what I thought. Clean up your act fans and the team will show you the respect you want… you are in it together after all.. hence the Wild’s motto “Team of 18,000” you are in it together..

Hockey rocks and GO WILD!!!

Throwing Jerseys?

I admit.. when I heard about this article I was a little surprised myself. I do agree 100% with the player who was the subject of the article. The topic in question was Toronto’s 9-2 loss to Nashville and what happened after is what everyone is talking about. Fans started to throw jerseys on the ice.. yes jerseys… Toronto Maple Leafs jerseys were thrown to the ice because of disgusted fans. THIS IS WRONG! You can boo and you can yell but do not throw things… I don’t care what the thing is.. you are endangering the players and the refs depending on what it is. You also make yourself look pretty classless.. just like Maple Leaf’s Phil Kessel stated. You are disrespecting so many people with throwing the jersey.. I agree with Kessel saying you are being disrespectful to every player that has put on that jersey and the history of that team. I don’t care how bad the loss was.. You have the class to accept the loss and move on. DON’T THROW THINGS… it makes you look bad. The article is at the end if you would like to take a look..

Work, work and work

Well, I haven’t been on in quite a while but I’ve been pretty busy between work and trying to relax and everything else in between that as well. It’s been a week and a half since my friend Danielle and I went to the Wild game against Pittsburgh. We got there a little late after missing the first train (they changed the schedule) and then a long ride through Minneapolis to St. Paul and a quick walk to the X. We got there in time to see about half the game which even though they lost was way way way worth it. We even saw a goal waved off that excuse my language was total Bullshit! They called goaltender interference on the Wild even though the Wild player was clearly pushed on top of the goalie and could do nothing about it. No offense, I know reffing is hard but that game was uhhh not well officiated either. The Wild did not play well but that goal could have been the changing point in the game.. it would have been 3-2 Pittsburgh but the Wild would have had the momentum… ugh what can you do? I’ll tell you something that did disgust me though. The Wild fans that were even more pissed about the call decided to throw things on the ice… I DO NOT FIND THIS OKAY AND NEVER WILL! That is an unacceptable act of plain disrespect. The players had to pick up whatever was thrown and it just made us look trashy. Come on Minnesota we are better than that… I understand booing but don’t take it any farther.. it WON’T HELP! I did get to see Sidney Crosby play which was pretty awesome!!! I also got an autograph from my all-time favorite Wild player Wes Walz after the game which was pretty neat as well. Danielle seemed to have had a blast and said she would go again so despite the mishaps along the way I think it was PRETTY GREAT and can’t wait to go again!!

Aside from that I did have an interview this past Tuesday for an internship position with the Minnesota Swarm… YES THE MINNESOTA SWARM!! Needless to say I’m pretty excited and hopeful that it works out. The interview seemed to go pretty well including the interviewer being very interested in a newspaper story I wrote while at UND about the Swarm and he made a copy of it so he could continue to read it and show the owner.. YES THE OWNER!! I was pretty shocked at that haha. I won’t know until around the end of the month but I’m pretty anxious and really hopeful!

One last note.. other than working a lot and trying to plan Christmas presents.. I am also going to try to buy Nickelback tickets. NICKELBACK IS COMING TO MINNESOTA IN MARCH!! I’m pretty ecstatic about that haha. Well the Wild did win last night and cut their losing streak so things are going pretty well. Jesse and I got to hang out and have our movie day yesterday after Monday and Tuesday got snowed out haha. I’m going to end it there and say HOCKEY ROCKS AND GO WILD!!
